Tricycles Under Free Healthcare Programme Are Not Ambulances - President Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has clarified that tricycles being distributed under the Free Primary Healthcare Programme are meant to support outreach services and are not intended to function as ambulances.
Speaking at a sod-cutting ceremony on April 18, he addressed misconceptions about the initiative, explaining that the vehicles are designed to improve healthcare delivery at the community level. He noted that Ghana has more than 6,000 Community-based Health Planning and Services compounds, and the motorcycles and tricycles are part of equipment provided to support their operations.
According to the President, the tricycles will help health workers travel between communities to conduct screenings and provide essential services, especially in areas with mobility challenges. He added that the vehicles include compartments for storing vaccines to maintain cold-chain requirements during immunisation outreach.
He explained that distribution of motorcycles and tricycles would depend on regional needs, with motorcycles mainly used in some northern areas, while tricycles would be deployed in parts of southern Ghana where health workers may not ride motorcycles.
President Mahama emphasised that the vehicles are intended for preventive healthcare, including vaccinations and screening for conditions such as Hypertension and Diabetes.
The clarification follows public debate about the purpose of the tricycles under the Free Primary Healthcare Programme, which is expected to begin in 150 districts during its first phase to strengthen preventive care and expand access to universal health coverage.
