Police Launch Manhunt After Armed Robbers Kill Berekum Chelsea Player on Highway

Police in the Ashanti Region have launched a manhunt for six armed robbers who attacked a team bus carrying players of Berekum Chelsea, resulting in the death of footballer Dominic Frimpong.

In a statement signed by DSP Godwin Ahianyo of the Public Affairs Unit, the Ashanti Regional Police Command assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators as quickly as possible.

The incident reportedly occurred around 10:30 pm on April 12 along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyanihin District. The team was travelling back to Berekum after a trip from Samreboi when the bus was ambushed.

Police indicated that six armed men, three of whom were carrying pump-action guns, attacked the VIP bus. In an attempt to escape, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road into nearby bushes.

During the attack, Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.

Another passenger, identified as George Owusu Afriyie, was reportedly robbed of cash during the incident. Investigators also retrieved two spent cartridges from the scene to assist with ongoing investigations.

The tragic killing has heightened concerns about safety on Ghana’s highways, particularly during night travel. Police say additional personnel and crime scene experts have been deployed to track down the suspects, while urging the public to remain calm and provide any useful information.
