Raheem Sterling’s Chelsea Exit Confirmed as Winger Seeks Next Move in London
Raheem Sterling has officially left Chelsea after a mutual contract termination, ending a turbulent spell marked by exile, a difficult loan at Arsenal, and stalled transfer attempts. Now a free agent, the winger prioritises staying in London, with clubs like Fulham, West Ham, and Crystal Palace monitoring his situation.
Raheem Sterling’s future has finally been settled after Chelsea confirmed that the club and the 31-year-old winger have mutually agreed to terminate his contract, officially bringing his turbulent Stamford Bridge spell to an end.
Sterling, who joined Chelsea for £47.5 million in the summer of 2022 as part of the early BlueCo era, had long fallen out of favour. He was frozen out at the start of the 2024–25 season, spent a difficult loan spell at Arsenal, and has not made a single appearance for Chelsea this campaign.
In a statement, Chelsea said:
“We thank Raheem for the contribution he made while a Chelsea player and wish him well for the next stage in his career.”
A Costly Exit for Chelsea
Sterling entered the final 18 months of his contract in January 2026, with wages believed to be around £325,000 per week. He was owed roughly £22 million in remaining salary, making negotiations over a contract termination complicated and prolonged. Chelsea were unable to find any club willing to match his high wages, ruling out an outright transfer and leaving a termination as the only realistic option.
Though the final settlement figure has not been revealed, it frees Chelsea from what had become an expensive, long-running headache. Since his exile in 2024, Sterling earned around £22 million, with Arsenal contributing only a small portion during his loan stint.
His departure also marks the end of the so-called “bomb squad” — players forced to train away from the first team — with Axel Disasi already given a path back by new manager Liam Rosenior.
Sterling Prioritises Staying in London
Despite interest from clubs abroad, including Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen, Sterling made it clear last summer that he had no intention of leaving London. He rejected multiple loan options and spent the first half of this season on the sidelines.
Now a free agent, Sterling can join any club even outside the transfer window. Fulham and West Ham United have already been linked, while Brentford, Crystal Palace, and Tottenham Hotspur are expected to monitor the situation closely given his preference to remain in the capital.
Chelsea Looking Ahead
Chelsea are not expected to sign a direct replacement, having already strengthened their wings with the summer arrivals of Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens. Sterling’s exit opens up wage space and clears one of the biggest unresolved situations at the club, allowing Rosenior to continue shaping a younger, more dynamic squad.
