U.S. Embassy Warns Ghanaians Against Overstaying Visas During World Cup Travel
The Consul General at the United States Embassy in Ghana, Elliot Fertik, has advised Ghanaians travelling to the United States for the upcoming FIFA World Cup not to overstay their visas, warning that such actions could have serious legal and long-term consequences.
Speaking on World Cup Central on Channel One TV on Friday, May 15, Mr Fertik said U.S. authorities are concerned that some travellers may attempt to use the tournament as an opportunity to remain in the country illegally after the event.
He stressed that visa overstays and unlawful residence in the United States constitute violations of immigration laws and can negatively affect other Ghanaians seeking legitimate travel opportunities.
According to him, immigration officials closely monitor visa overstay rates by nationality, and repeated violations by citizens of a particular country can influence future visa decisions for other applicants from the same country.
Mr Fertik explained that when overstay rates increase, it can become more difficult for authorities to issue visas and facilitate travel arrangements for genuine travellers.
He therefore urged prospective visitors to strictly comply with the conditions attached to their visas and avoid any attempts to remain in the United States illegally.
The Consul General emphasised that overstaying a visa is not worth the risk, adding that illegal immigration damages trust within immigration systems and undermines opportunities for lawful travel.
He reiterated that respecting immigration laws is important not only for individual travellers but also for preserving positive travel relations between Ghana and the United States.
