Bagbin, Foreign Ministry and Attorney-General Involved in Netherlands MP Detention Case — Dafeamekpor
The Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has disclosed that Parliament and several state institutions are actively handling the case involving the detention of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North in the Netherlands.
According to Mr Dafeamekpor, the incident occurred on Sunday and was immediately escalated after he was informed about the matter early that morning.
He explained that the issue was first brought to the attention of parliamentary leadership, after which the Majority Leader initiated discussions with officials in the Netherlands to obtain details about the circumstances surrounding the detention.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View programme on Wednesday, May 13, he stated that the response has since expanded to include several high-level state actors.
These include the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ghana’s Ambassador to The Hague, the Attorney-General’s Department, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Clerk to Parliament.
Mr Dafeamekpor noted that the involvement of the Attorney-General is especially important because the case may involve legal issues connected to the Rome Statute as well as matters relating to the lawmaker’s diplomatic passport.
He further revealed that Parliament has already arranged legal representation for the detained MP and that a Ghanaian lawyer based in The Hague is currently managing the case.
According to him, consultations and engagements have been ongoing since Sunday, including discussions with the legal team to ensure the matter is properly addressed.
The South Dayi MP stressed that Parliament has coordinated efforts across all relevant institutions to respond to the situation comprehensively.
He also assured the public that the detained lawmaker is reportedly in stable condition.
Mr Dafeamekpor explained that although the trip was undertaken in a private capacity, the fact that the MP travelled with a diplomatic passport has elevated the matter into one requiring parliamentary and state intervention.
He added that diplomatic and legal processes are continuing as authorities work toward resolving the issue.
