Cabinet Set to Deliberate on Constitutional Review Proposals Today

The government is expected to make a significant decision on proposed constitutional reforms as President John Dramani Mahama chairs a special Cabinet meeting on Thursday, May 14, to review recommendations submitted by the constitutional review committee.

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu revealed that a draft government position paper has already been prepared following a detailed assessment by the Attorney General and the President’s legal advisers.

According to him, President Mahama had earlier instructed that the committee’s report be thoroughly examined to help shape the government’s response to the constitutional reform proposals.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu explained that the review process has now been completed, paving the way for Cabinet to decide on the government’s official position regarding the recommendations.

Speaking on Joy News, he stated that the special Cabinet session would be chaired personally by the President and would focus primarily on considering the draft position paper.

He noted that the outcome of the meeting will determine which proposals the government intends to support, revise, or reject.

According to him, once Cabinet finalises and approves the document, it will be released publicly to allow citizens to understand the government’s official stance on the constitutional review exercise.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu also clarified that unlike the process followed for a commission of inquiry, the constitutional review committee requires the government to issue a position paper rather than a white paper.

He further indicated that although the constitutional review report is the main item on the Cabinet agenda, other national matters may also be discussed during the meeting.

Following Cabinet approval, the government is expected to move to the next phase of implementation, including the establishment of a committee to oversee the execution of approved reforms.

He added that the recommendations would be evaluated individually, with some likely to be adopted fully, others modified, and some rejected depending on practical and legal considerations.

The spokesperson also noted that the government intends to engage the public further after Cabinet completes its deliberations on the review proposals.
