Ghana Medical Trust Fund to Support Cancer Research, Medical Equipment and Specialist Healthcare Training
The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, says the Mahamacares initiative will go beyond covering patients’ medical expenses to also invest in healthcare research, medical infrastructure, and specialist training.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Madam Darko-Opoku explained that the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Ghana demands a more comprehensive healthcare strategy.
According to her, the initiative is not limited to financing treatment costs but is also focused on strengthening the healthcare system’s capacity to diagnose and manage chronic illnesses.
She stated that the programme intends to support the procurement of specialised medical equipment such as CT scans, MRI machines, and PET scanners, which are essential for diagnosing and treating diseases including cancer and cardiovascular conditions.
Madam Darko-Opoku explained that access to such equipment is necessary for doctors to accurately determine treatment pathways for patients suffering from chronic diseases.
She also noted that investments in healthcare infrastructure would improve the ability of medical facilities to provide specialised treatment services for people living with long-term illnesses.
In addition, she stressed the importance of conducting research into the causes and rising number of deaths linked to non-communicable diseases across communities in Ghana.
According to her, discussions have already begun with the University of Ghana regarding possible partnerships to support research activities under the Trust Fund.
The Administrator further indicated that the initiative will prioritise the training of specialist healthcare professionals capable of managing conditions such as cancer, stroke, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.
She emphasised that chronic diseases require highly trained specialists and cannot be adequately handled by general practitioners alone.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund forms part of the government’s broader healthcare intervention strategy aimed at tackling the growing burden of chronic diseases nationwide.
