NDC Maintains Call for Electoral Commission of Ghana Leadership Removal Despite Petition Dismissal

The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed its demand for changes in the leadership of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), despite the Chief Justice’s decision to dismiss petitions seeking their removal.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, February 19, the party’s Legal Director, Edudzi Tamakloe, said the ruling does not alter the NDC’s view that the EC Chairperson and her deputies should step aside.

He stated that the party believes the Commission’s performance over the past five years raises significant concerns.

Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, in dismissing the petitions against the EC leadership and the Special Prosecutor, acknowledged that the issues raised were serious but ruled they did not meet the prima facie threshold required under Article 146 to initiate removal proceedings.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions across the political landscape.

Mr. Tamakloe, however, insisted the party remains firm in its position. He suggested that although the Chief Justice recognised the administrative and constitutional weight of the concerns raised, the dismissal indicates that the issues may need to be pursued through other legal avenues.

He noted that the matters could potentially be litigated in a different forum rather than through the Article 146 removal process.
