Judges to Apply Law, Avoid Politics - Afenyo-Markin Urges Judges
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on judges to remain independent and resist external influence when performing their judicial duties.
In a Facebook post on April 17, he cautioned members of the bench that their rulings would eventually face public scrutiny and be judged by history. He warned against acting on unseen instructions, stressing that judges must rely on their professional judgment.
He urged the judiciary to apply legal reasoning, common sense and remain faithful to their oath of office, adding that decisions should be guided by Article 296.
The Minority Leader further advised judges to avoid political influence and maintain neutrality within the justice system. He suggested that staying away from partisan considerations would help preserve the integrity of the courts.
His comments follow his earlier criticism of a case involving Abubakar Yakubu, also known as Baba Amando, who was remanded for two weeks by an Accra Circuit Court.
While questioning the court’s decision, Afenyo-Markin commended the Ghana Police Service for what he described as professionalism in handling the arrest and investigation.
The remarks contribute to ongoing discussions about judicial independence and conduct in high-profile cases.
