Minority disputes BoG figures, says 2025 loss closer to GH¢44bn

The Minority in Parliament has challenged the reported GH¢15.6 billion operating loss declared by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) for the 2025 financial year, while acknowledging the Bank’s openness in publishing its accounts.

According to the BoG’s 2025 Annual Report and Financial Statements, the loss represents a rise from GH¢9.48 billion in 2024 and marks the fourth consecutive year of deficits, following earlier losses recorded in 2022 and 2023.

However, addressing a press conference in Accra on Sunday, May 3, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah argued that the official figures understate the true scale of the loss.

He alleged that the central bank used accounting methods such as reclassifying portions of the deficit into “other comprehensive income,” which he described as a way of reducing the reported operating loss.

Based on the Minority’s assessment, he stated that the actual operating loss is closer to GH¢34.9 billion. He further claimed that when proceeds from gold sales—estimated at GH¢9.6 billion—are included, the total loss rises to approximately GH¢44 billion.

The Minority maintains that these adjustments provide a clearer picture of the Bank’s financial position and has called for greater scrutiny of the figures presented in the official accounts.
