Workers betrayed – Minority blames Mahama administration for rising hardship

The Minority caucus on Parliament’s Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions Committee has criticised the administration of John Dramani Mahama, accusing it of worsening economic conditions for Ghanaian workers.

In a statement marking International Workers’ Day, signed by Ranking Member Mavis Nkansah-Boadu, the caucus noted that while the occasion is meant to celebrate workers, it should also serve as a time to reflect on their resilience and contributions to national development.

The statement acknowledged the vital role workers play in sustaining the economy and communities but described current conditions as troubling, saying many workers are facing increasing hardship.

It highlighted several economic pressures, including declining and uncompetitive producer prices affecting cocoa farmers, which it said are eroding incomes and threatening livelihoods.

The caucus also raised concerns about job losses and growing insecurity across various sectors, leaving many families without stable sources of income.

In the public sector, it pointed to delays in salaries and postings for teachers, as well as protests by health workers over unpaid entitlements. According to the statement, these challenges are undermining morale, productivity, and national development.

The Minority called on the government to go beyond symbolic gestures and take concrete steps to address the situation, including protecting jobs, ensuring fair wages, clearing arrears, and restoring confidence in the economy.

It strongly condemned what it described as the continued unfair treatment of workers and urged immediate action to reverse the trend.

The caucus also appealed to workers, unions, and stakeholders to remain united in defending their rights and welfare, reaffirming its commitment to advocating for policies that prioritise people-centered development.
