“I Saw Their True Colours” – Socrate Safo Speaks on Betrayal After NPP’s 2024 Election Defeat

Ghanaian filmmaker and NPP member Socrate Safo says the 2024 general elections opened his eyes to the “true colours” of people who had portrayed themselves as loyal allies during the campaign period.

Speaking in an interview on Okay FM, the former Director for Creative Arts at the National Commission on Culture reflected on how the New Patriotic Party’s political momentum attracted individuals who appeared committed only for them to disappear once the party lost the elections.

According to him, the NPP’s defeat exposed the pretence, opportunism, and disloyalty of many who had surrounded the party during the campaign.

“The 2024 elections taught me something about people. There were a whole lot of people who were going up and down with us. But after the elections, we saw their true colours,” he said.

Mr. Safo noted that while some associates vanished immediately after the loss, a few individuals proved themselves trustworthy. He cited colleague Ola Michael as someone whose loyalty he respects because their relationship is built on clear boundaries.

“Someone like Ola Michael, I trust him because I know the limit I can go with him. There are things I can’t tell him, and there are things he can’t tell me,” he said.

He contrasted this with others who pretended to be friends during the campaign but could not be found once the results were announced.

“Those people who came to me like they were friends and were walking with us as if they could be confided in… after the elections, I saw them for what they are.”

The New Patriotic Party suffered a decisive defeat in the December 2024 general elections, with John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress returning to power after a campaign dominated by economic concerns.
