Apologise for Not Delivering on LGBTQ Bill Commitment - NPP To President Mahama
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is urging President John Dramani Mahama to apologise to Ghanaians and religious bodies, accusing him of failing to fulfil a major campaign pledge regarding LGBTQ legislation.
According to the party, then-candidate Mahama assured religious leaders and other stakeholders during the 2024 campaign that his administration would introduce a government-backed bill aimed at comprehensively addressing LGBTQ matters in the country.
The NPP says the lack of progress on this commitment amounts to a breach of trust, particularly with faith-based groups that engaged him before the elections.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s headquarters on Tuesday, April 7, Member of Parliament for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour, stated that Ghanaians still expect the president to honour the assurances he gave while seeking office.
He stressed:
“Ghana’s core concerns have not changed since 2024, so the president must be held to his commitment to introduce a government-sponsored bill he promised the clergy to comprehensively deal with LGBTQ issues if elected.”
He added that President Mahama should apologise to religious leaders, including the Christian Council of Ghana, the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, as well as traditional leaders, for what he described as inconsistency between his position in opposition and now in government.
