Free SHS Feeding Problems Resolved – Haruna Iddrisu
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has assured the public that the government has secured enough funding to guarantee a steady food supply for students benefiting from Ghana’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.
He explained that after reviewing the implementation of the policy, authorities identified several operational challenges, especially those linked to student feeding and food shortages in schools. Measures have since been introduced to address these concerns and improve the smooth operation of the programme.
Speaking during the inauguration of the National Teaching Council’s regional office complex in Tamale, the minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening and sustaining the flagship education initiative.
Haruna Iddrisu admitted that in previous years some schools experienced food shortages severe enough to disrupt academic work, with students occasionally sent home before the end of term. He, however, stated that such incidents should no longer occur because the government has now made sufficient financial arrangements to support the programme.
According to the minister, funding support from the Ghana Education Trust Fund has been strengthened to ensure reliable financing for Free SHS and uninterrupted feeding in secondary schools nationwide.
