NPP calls for release of Hanan Abdul-Wahab and spouse, accuses EOCO of overreach

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticised the government and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over what it describes as political harassment following the re-arrest of businessman Hanan Abdul-Wahab and his wife.

In a statement dated May 6, 2026, and signed by the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, the NPP condemned the move as an abuse of power, characterising it as intimidation driven by political motives.

The party alleged that EOCO denied the couple’s legal representatives access to them for more than 24 hours after their re-arrest, describing the situation as a violation of constitutional rights and due process.

This reaction follows the Attorney-General’s decision to withdraw charges in a high-profile case known as “The Rumble in the Jungle.” Despite the withdrawal, EOCO reportedly proceeded to detain the couple again, a development the NPP says raises serious legal and procedural concerns.
According to the party, Hanan Abdul-Wahab and his wife had complied fully with their bail conditions since their initial arrest in June of the previous year, and therefore do not pose any flight risk that would justify their continued detention.

The NPP further warned that state institutions must operate within the confines of the law and avoid actions that could erode public confidence. It stressed that the exercise of power should remain accountable and consistent with constitutional principles.

The party is demanding the immediate release of the couple, insisting that investigative bodies like the Economic and Organised Crime Office must uphold transparency and fairness in their operations to maintain public trust.
