Mahama Cares rolls out specialist training programme to boost healthcare capacity
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has introduced a nationwide programme aimed at supporting specialist training for healthcare professionals, as part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s health system and improve service delivery.
The initiative, driven by the Fund’s Administrator, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, aligns with the Trust Fund’s core objectives and focuses on building capacity among specialist doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other key health workers. The goal is to enhance access to quality care, particularly in addressing chronic diseases.
To advance this agenda, the Fund engaged key professional training institutions, including the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Ghana College of Pharmacists, and the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives.
These engagements resulted in formal partnerships designed to expand specialist training nationwide. As part of the collaboration, agreements were signed and financial support provided to facilitate the training of 100 pharmacists, 100 nurses, and a new group of specialist doctors.
According to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, the programme demonstrates a shift from policy discussions to tangible interventions that directly strengthen healthcare delivery.
The Fund has set a target of ensuring that every region in Ghana has at least three specialist doctors, nurses, and pharmacists within the next three years.
Overall, the initiative represents a significant investment in human capital and is expected to improve the country’s ability to respond effectively to the rising burden of chronic diseases.
