President John Mahama urges landlords to comply with six-month rent advance law
President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the persistent violation of Ghana’s rent advance regulations, despite laws limiting advance rent payments to a maximum of six months.
According to the President, weak enforcement has allowed many landlords to continue demanding excessive advance payments from tenants seeking accommodation.
Speaking during the sod-cutting ceremony for the Green City Project at Dedesua in the Ashanti Region, he noted that many tenants often choose not to report such practices because of their urgent need for housing.
He explained that although rent courts exist to prosecute landlords who breach the law, enforcement remains difficult because tenants are usually unwilling to file complaints for fear of losing accommodation opportunities.
President Mahama stressed that the government’s objective is to ensure fairness, dignity, and protection for tenants within the housing sector.
He also revealed that the National Home Ownership Fund will continue to provide long-term financing support, especially for retirees, to help secure housing after years of service.
The President added that the Green City Project comes at a crucial time as government steps up efforts to address Ghana’s housing deficit and improve access to affordable homes.
