President Mahama unveils affordable housing plan for public sector workers

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major low-cost housing programme aimed at providing affordable and decent accommodation for public sector workers across Ghana.

The initiative, according to the President, is being implemented in collaboration with organised labour and financial institutions to help teachers, nurses, doctors, and other civil servants access housing under flexible terms.

He made the announcement on Saturday, May 9, during the sod-cutting ceremony for the more than 1,000-unit Green City Housing Project at Dedesua in the Ashanti Region.

President Mahama explained that the programme will operate through an innovative housing finance system supported by a GH¢3 billion revolving fund. The facility will be established through a partnership involving government, organised labour, the private sector, and major financial institutions.

Under the arrangement, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust and Republic Bank Ghana will work with the government and labour unions to establish the fund.

The financing will then be used to support state housing developers, including the State Housing Company and the Tema Development Corporation, to construct housing units across the country.

According to the President, banks will also provide mortgage facilities to enable workers to purchase the homes and repay over a period of 15 to 20 years.

He noted that the model is intended to make home ownership more accessible and sustainable for public sector workers while improving the country’s overall housing delivery system through structured financing arrangements.
