June 4th Happened Because Selfishness And Greed Was Drifting Ghana Into Darkness - NDC General Secretary
The General Secretary of the Ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey has indicated that, the June 4th Revolution that happened some 47 years ago did not happened by accident but to redeemed Ghana from drifting into darkness due to greed and selfishness that had taken over by people in government at the time.
He made this know whiles addressing a gathering to commemorate the 47th June fourth uprising at Banda in the Bono Region. According to him, “22 years after Ghana’s Independence, the Nation that was destined to rise to salvage Africa was rather drifting into doom , economic hardship , corruption and the people that were put in position to save the Ghanaian people were rather killing them with greed and selfishness “.
The June 4 1979 Uprising was a violent but transformative military coup in Ghana on Led by Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings which was triggered by widespread corruption, economic hardship, and a mutiny of lower-ranked military personnel. The uprising was anchored on three fundamental pillars: Probity, Accountability, and Social Justice.
Before the uprising, former president Rawlings and several junior officers had staged a failed coup on May 15, 1979. They were arrested and put on trial by the Supreme Military Council (SMC) Fearing that Rawlings would be executed, some bold lower-rank soldiers stormed the prison cells on June 4, 1979, and freed him.
Rawlings after his release went to the national radio station to announce that the junior ranks had seized control, citing deep anger over institutional decay.
Rawlings established and chaired the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), composed entirely of junior officers and enlisted men. The AFRC executed a brutal anti-corruption campaign. This included the execution of three former Heads of State (Acheampong, Akuffo, and Afrifa) and several senior military officers deemed responsible for ruining Ghana’s economy.
The AFRC held power for just three months and allowed the scheduled 1979 general elections to proceed, which led to the swearing-in of Dr. Hilla Limann as President of the Third Republic.
While the uprising was controversial due to the violence and extrajudicial killings that occurred, many Ghanaians view it as a necessary revolt that instilled discipline and helped shape the country’s political transition to the Fourth Republic.
But for the NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiave Kwetey, commemorating the June 4 uprising is call for the party to reflect on the conviction of Rawlings who led the revolution that statesmanship goes beyond personal gains and interest.
