Ghanaians Looking to Bawumia for Solutions to Cocoa Sector Challenges - Annoh-Dompreh
Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh has said Ghanaians, particularly cocoa farmers, are expecting Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, to provide a credible policy alternative to address the challenges facing the cocoa sector.
His remarks come amid concerns over the government's decision to adjust cocoa producer prices. On February 12, authorities announced a producer price of GH¢41,392 per tonne, equivalent to GH¢2,587 per bag, for the remainder of the 2025/2026 crop season, a move that has generated debate among farmers and industry stakeholders.
In response to concerns raised by cocoa-growing communities, the Minority Caucus established a select committee to engage directly with farmers across the country and gather their views on the state of the sector.
The committee, led by Annoh-Dompreh, toured several cocoa-producing areas and compiled findings and recommendations aimed at improving conditions for farmers and strengthening the industry.
Presenting the committee’s report to Dr. Bawumia, Annoh-Dompreh stated that many Ghanaians are looking to the NPP flagbearer for practical and trustworthy proposals that can help revive confidence in the cocoa sector.
He expressed the view that farmers want assurances backed by realistic and achievable policies rather than promises that cannot be implemented.
According to him, stakeholders are eager to hear Bawumia’s position on the challenges confronting cocoa production and the measures he would propose to improve the welfare of farmers and sustain the industry.
The Minority believes the findings from its nationwide consultations will contribute to future policy discussions and help shape proposals aimed at stabilising the cocoa sector, improving farmer incomes and addressing concerns raised by cocoa-growing communities.
