I Was Promised GH¢2 Million to Step Down for Deputy Speaker to Join NPP — Kwasi Nti

Aspiring Ashanti Regional First Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Akwasi Nti, has alleged that he was promised GH¢2 million to relinquish his position as the party’s chairman in the Adansi Fomena Constituency to facilitate the return of independent MP Andrew Amoako Asiamah to the party’s fold.

According to Akwasi Nti, the arrangement was linked to efforts by the NPP to secure the support of Amoako Asiamah in Parliament during the 8th Parliament, where the party sought to strengthen its majority caucus.

He explained that the MP, who currently serves as Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, contested the 2020 parliamentary election as an independent candidate after disagreements with the party over issues relating to his candidature. Despite legal attempts to resolve the matter, Amoako Asiamah proceeded to contest independently and won the seat.

Speaking in an interview on Pure FM on June 2, 2026, Akwasi Nti claimed that after the election, the NPP engaged the legislator in discussions aimed at bringing him back into the party's ranks to support government business in Parliament.

According to him, Amoako Asiamah allegedly made his return conditional on Akwasi Nti stepping aside from his role within the constituency.

The party stalwart further claimed that he was promised GH¢2 million as part of the arrangement but said the amount was never paid despite his cooperation.

He stated that the failure to honour the promise led to disagreements between him and some party officials, although he declined to identify those involved.

Akwasi Nti also disclosed that former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, later invited him to his residence and provided him with GH¢1 million to help settle outstanding debts.

According to him, it was after receiving that support that he agreed to step aside, despite not receiving the GH¢2 million he claims had initially been promised.

The allegations have sparked renewed discussion about internal party negotiations and events surrounding the formation of the majority caucus in Ghana’s 8th Parliament. No official response has yet been issued by Amoako Asiamah or other individuals mentioned in the claims.
