World Bank Commits $300m to Boost Ghana’s Secondary Education Transformation Programme

The World Bank has committed $300 million to support Ghana’s upcoming Secondary Education Transformation for Results and Jobs initiative, a flagship programme designed to enhance learning outcomes and expand employment pathways for young people.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during a visit by the Managing Director and Chief Knowledge Officer of the World Bank Group, Paschal Donohoe, to Osu Mahean Basic School in Accra.

According to the minister, the initiative forms part of the government’s broader agenda to modernise Ghana’s secondary education system and better equip students with practical skills required for the job market and national development.

He explained that the World Bank’s financial support will help accelerate reforms focused on improving teaching quality, strengthening learning outcomes, and enhancing the linkage between education and job creation.

The visit was carried out under the framework of the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP), which seeks to boost foundational learning and strengthen accountability mechanisms within Ghana’s education sector.

Speaking during the engagement on Monday, March 16, Paschal Donohoe reaffirmed the World Bank’s readiness to continue supporting Ghana’s education reforms and efforts to develop stronger human capital.

“I want to thank the Minister for Education and the Government of Ghana for recognising the importance of education and for being excellent partners in working together to support the young people of Ghana and the future,” he said.

He emphasised that robust education systems are essential for preparing young people for opportunities in a rapidly evolving global economy and pledged continued collaboration with Ghana to improve learning outcomes and skills training.
