Ghana Education Service Closes Recruitment Portal After Over 40,000 Apply for 7,000 Teaching Jobs

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has shut down its teacher recruitment portal shortly after it opened on April 10, 2026, due to an overwhelming number of applications.

Officials revealed that more than 40,000 prospective teachers applied for only 7,000 available positions, forcing the Service to close the portal earlier than planned to manage the volume of submissions.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu explained that the limited recruitment was due to budget constraints, despite the high demand for teaching opportunities nationwide.

He noted that, ideally, the government would have recruited up to 50,000 teachers if resources had been available, but financial limitations made this impossible.

The Minister emphasized that the recruitment process had been conducted transparently, with official clearance granted to hire a restricted number of qualified applicants.

He added that both degree and diploma holders were eligible for the positions, which were publicly advertised to ensure fairness.

Mr. Iddrisu also described the large number of applications as a clear indication of rising unemployment and strong interest in teaching jobs.

According to him, applicants who successfully submitted their forms before the portal closed will undergo a thorough assessment based on competence, qualifications, and readiness for the role.

He assured that the final selection process would be conducted fairly and strictly on merit.
