Minority Welcomes Fuel Tax Cuts, Demands Accountability on GH¢1 Levy
The Minority in Parliament supports the government’s temporary fuel tax relief but demands transparency on the GH¢1 fuel levy and its usage.
The Minority in Parliament has welcomed the government’s decision to suspend some taxes and levies on petroleum products, a move aimed at easing pressure on consumers amid rising global oil prices linked to tensions in the Middle East.
The intervention is expected to run for an initial four-week period, after which authorities will review the situation and determine whether further action is necessary.
Speaking to Citi News, the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, Collins Adomako Mensah, described the directive as a step in the right direction.
He noted that although details on the specific taxes and margins to be removed had not been fully outlined, the Minority supports efforts by the government to cushion citizens from the impact of increasing fuel costs.
However, he also urged the government to provide transparency regarding the GH¢1 fuel levy. According to him, the law requires that a report be submitted to Parliament detailing how much has been collected and how the funds have been utilised.
Mr. Adomako Mensah indicated that the deadline for presenting the report passed on March 31, yet Parliament has not received any official update. He said the lack of clarity leaves uncertainty about the total amount accrued and how the money has been spent.
He therefore called for accountability, stressing the importance of keeping Parliament and the public informed about the management of the levy
