Scrap sanitation levy amid fuel price hikes - Miracles Aboagye urges government
Team Lead of The People’s Forum, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, is calling on the government to scrap the Sanitation and Pollution Levy, arguing that authorities must remain consistent with their earlier position that the tax is unnecessary.
Speaking on the AM Show on 7 April 2026, Mr Aboagye said many Ghanaians were made to believe that the levy had been removed, yet it continues to appear at the pumps. He stressed that the matter goes beyond abolishing the tax, adding that the government must stand by its previous stance that the levy was not needed.
He explained that the recent surge in fuel prices has intensified the financial burden on citizens, making the removal of the levy even more urgent. According to him, while there may have been reasons for maintaining the tax in the past, current economic conditions do not support its continued implementation.
Mr Aboagye noted that fuel prices have a direct impact on the cost of living, influencing transport fares, food prices and general household expenses. Removing the levy, he said, could provide some needed relief to already overstretched households.
He therefore called on the government to take decisive action by scrapping the Sanitation and Pollution Levy in line with the position it once championed.
