Youth in Walewale Lock Up Coordinating Director’s Office Amid Protest

The office of the Municipal Coordinating Director in Walewale was barricaded on Tuesday after a group of protesting youth stormed the Municipal Assembly premises, forcing the Director, Justice Bayon, to leave for safety.

The youth reportedly arrived early in the morning, chanting slogans and demanding action over what they described as long-standing grievances. Their presence created panic among staff and visitors, disrupting normal activities at the Assembly.

Sources within the Assembly indicated that the Coordinating Director left the premises after receiving information about the planned protest. Upon arrival, the group allegedly forced entry into sections of the office and locked up the Director’s office.

Some protesters accused Justice Bayon of absenteeism and incompetence, calling for his replacement. They warned that they could return if their concerns are not addressed.

The demonstration was also linked to frustrations over unemployment, poor road conditions, and delays in local development projects. Protesters claimed that equipment under the District Road Improvement Programme had been left idle despite deteriorating roads in the municipality.

Observers believe the unrest may also be connected to internal political tensions within the area. No injuries were reported, although the incident left municipal workers shaken.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Mohammed Rabiu Jabaah, told JoyNews he would need clearance from the Regional Minister before commenting. The Coordinating Director also declined to speak publicly on the matter.
