President Mahama Warns Non-Communicable Diseases Are Driving Ghana’s Health Crisis
President John Dramani Mahama has stated that Non-Communicable Diseases are now the biggest health burden in Ghana, citing conditions such as hypertension, cancers and stroke as major pressures on the healthcare system.
He made the remarks on April 15, 2026, during the launch of the Free Primary Healthcare Programme at the Shai Osudoku District Hospital. According to him, the initiative aims to shift Ghana’s healthcare focus from treatment to prevention, particularly for lifestyle-related diseases.
President Mahama noted that illnesses such as Breast cancer, Cervical cancer, Hypertension, Stroke, cardiovascular diseases and renal complications now account for a significant portion of the country’s disease burden.
He explained that the programme will prioritise early detection, community screening and preventive education to reduce risk factors. Public awareness campaigns will also focus on lifestyle changes needed to prevent these conditions.
The President added that the Free Primary Healthcare Programme forms part of broader efforts to expand universal health coverage while strengthening preventive care at the community level.
