Budget Constraints Limit Teacher Recruitment to 7,000 - Education Minister
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu says budget constraints limited teacher recruitment to 7,000 despite high demand. He also announced plans for a digital education policy to improve learning outcomes.
Haruna Iddrisu has justified the decision to recruit only 7,000 teachers, stating that financial limitations have prevented the government from hiring more educators despite increasing demand nationwide.
The Education Minister made the remarks during the launch and communications briefing of the 19th edition of the eLearning Africa Conference on Tuesday, April 14, where he addressed concerns about the adequacy of the recruitment exercise.
He explained that if sufficient resources were available, the government would have recruited up to 50,000 teachers across the country. However, due to budgetary challenges, the Ministry of Education sought approval from the Ministry of Finance to recruit only 7,000 teachers, including both degree and diploma holders.
According to him, the recruitment process has been publicly advertised and conducted transparently to ensure fairness for all applicants.
Despite criticism over the limited intake, the Minister emphasized that the exercise followed established procedures and adhered to due process.
Beyond recruitment, he also outlined plans to introduce a digital education policy aimed at addressing structural challenges within the education sector and improving learning outcomes nationwide.
