‘My People Are Suffering’ — Weija-Gbawe MP Appeals for Urgent Support After Dam Spillage Floods Communities
The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has appealed for immediate government intervention to assist residents displaced by severe flooding caused by the controlled spillage of the Weija Dam.
Addressing Parliament on Thursday, May 28, 2026, the MP described the situation in the constituency as critical, revealing that he had personally spent the past three days helping residents evacuate from flooded homes and businesses.
“Mr Speaker, it hasn’t been easy at all. I have been swimming for the past three days, helping people to evacuate. My people are suffering. Weija Gbawe is under siege,” he stated.
The flooding follows the opening of all five spill gates of the Weija Dam as part of routine dam management measures aimed at controlling rising water inflows and protecting the structural integrity of the dam.
The controlled spillage, however, caused water levels downstream to rise significantly, leading to flooding in several surrounding communities within the constituency.
According to the National Disaster Management Organisation, at least 85 affected residents have so far been relocated to designated safe shelters as emergency response efforts continue.
Residents in the affected communities are reported to be struggling with submerged homes, damaged property, and disrupted livelihoods following the flooding.
The MP is calling for urgent support and relief interventions to help affected families cope with the situation and recover from the impact of the disaster.
