Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko Urges Reforms to Strengthen Ghana’s 4th Republic
Former Energy Minister and flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko, has called on citizens to protect Ghana’s democratic system while working to address its weaknesses.
Speaking in an interview on Nhyira FM’s Kro Yi Mu Nsem, Agyarko admitted that the country’s democratic governance under the Fourth Republic is not without challenges. Nonetheless, he emphasised that any shortcomings must be resolved through constitutional and democratic processes rather than through military intervention.
“Our 4th Republic has been stabilized, and my humble appeal is that we should preserve it and correct its flaws instead of turning back to military rule,” he stated during the discussion with host Barima Kofi Dawson.
Agyarko revealed that he personally witnessed every coup in Ghana’s history, starting from the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah to the most recent military takeover. Drawing from his experiences, he noted that military regimes in Ghana and elsewhere have not delivered positive outcomes for citizens.
He explained that although corruption was often cited as justification for coups, the problem worsened under military governments. He also recounted the painful human rights violations and hardships endured by many during those periods.
Describing the era as distressing, Agyarko expressed hope that Ghana would never return to such times. He particularly cautioned younger generations, who may not have lived through military rule, against wishing for a return to that turbulent chapter in the nation’s history.
