Afenyo-Markin discloses $5m backing from Kennedy Agyapong, explains Effutu primary results
The Minority Leader in Parliament and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has revealed details of his longstanding relationship with former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, including financial support and collaborative community initiatives.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle on February 16, 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin disclosed that Mr Agyapong once invested $5 million in his business without any formal agreement, describing the move as a personal risk rooted in trust and friendship.
According to him, the relationship between the two extends beyond politics and business.
“When my business ran down, Kennedy gave me $5 million; we didn’t sign any agreement. He took a risk on me by giving me that money. We’re more than a family; there’s a history to it,” he said.
His remarks come after renewed public attention on Mr Agyapong’s performance in the New Patriotic Party presidential primary, where he secured 644 votes in Effutu compared to 79 for Mahamudu Bawumia.
Some supporters had suggested that despite not openly campaigning for Mr Agyapong, Mr Afenyo-Markin may have influenced the outcome in his constituency. He, however, attributed the result to years of support and development initiatives undertaken jointly with Mr Agyapong.
He noted that the former MP had contributed significantly to projects in Effutu, including the provision of vehicles and other assistance to residents.
Mr Afenyo-Markin also announced plans to construct an ICT facility in honour of Mr Agyapong, saying the project was conceived about five years ago and reflects their continued collaboration.
“I’m constructing an ICT facility, which, being named after him, was conceived five years ago; it’s a big project,” he added.
