Ayawaso East: Over 40,000 Voters Head to Polls to Choose New MP
More than 40,000 registered voters in Ayawaso East are casting their ballots today, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to elect a new Member of Parliament.
The by-election follows the passing of the area’s MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January 2026, which created a vacancy in the constituency.
After conducting their primaries, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) nominated Baba Ali as its parliamentary candidate. The National Democratic Congress (NDC), on the other hand, selected former High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, to contest the seat.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana has assured constituents that voting will proceed smoothly and in an orderly manner. In an interview with Citi News on Monday, March 2, the EC’s Director of Research, Fred Tetteh, stated that all necessary preparations have been completed to guarantee a transparent and credible election.
He reminded voters that the parliamentary by-election operates under the first-past-the-post system, meaning even a single vote can determine the outcome. He also warned that any confirmed incidents of electoral malpractice, particularly vote-buying, would result in sanctions by the Commission.
To ensure peace and order, security personnel have been stationed at polling centres throughout the constituency for the duration of the voting process.
