Winning back public trust is NPP’s real test ahead of 2028 – Oppong Nkrumah

Member of Parliament for Offoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has cautioned that unity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), though important, will not on its own guarantee victory in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, February 2, 2026, he warned party members against the assumption that internal cohesion alone is enough to return the NPP to power.

According to him, while a united party provides strength and stability, it merely lays the groundwork for the more difficult task of reconnecting with the Ghanaian people.

“We understand that unity makes us strong, but that is only the foundation,” he said, adding that the real challenge is rebuilding confidence among voters.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah stressed that the party must prioritise winning back the trust and goodwill of ordinary Ghanaians, particularly young and first-time voters.

“The bigger challenge is how we regain the love and trust of the average Ghanaian,” he noted.

He explained that this effort must begin with honest introspection, including a frank assessment of what the party did right and where it fell short while in government.

“It requires candour — acknowledging what worked, what didn’t, and communicating that honestly to the Ghanaian people,” he said.

The MP emphasised that the NPP is under no illusion that unity alone will be sufficient to secure electoral success.

“We are not deceiving ourselves that a united house is all we need. Absolutely not,” he added.

He revealed that the party has already begun internal reforms aimed at repositioning itself ahead of the 2028 elections, with unity serving only as the base for a wider strategic reset.

“There is a lot of work happening behind the scenes,” he disclosed.

As part of the reform process, Mr Oppong Nkrumah highlighted changes in the party’s approach to policy development, noting that recent constitutional amendments have led to the creation of a formal policy secretariat.

“For the first time, our constitution establishes a policy secretariat within the party,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the NPP’s presidential flagbearer for the 2028 elections after securing 56.48 per cent of valid votes in the party’s primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
