Teachers accepting rural postings to receive 20% salary bonus under new incentive scheme

Clement Apaak, Deputy Minister for Education, has announced that teachers who agree to work in rural and underserved communities will receive a 20% salary top-up.

Dr Apaak made the disclosure during a courtesy visit by top performers in the Basic Education Certificate Examination, emphasizing the government’s commitment to reducing disparities within Ghana’s education system.

He explained that under the government’s “Teacher Dabre” Programme, educators posted to remote and hard-to-reach areas will also be provided with accommodation support in addition to the financial incentive.

According to him, the initiative aims to make rural postings more appealing while enhancing teaching and learning outcomes at the basic education level.

Dr Apaak noted that the measures, first announced by John Dramani Mahama during the State of the Nation Address, are intended to ensure that students in underserved communities enjoy the same opportunities for academic success as those in urban areas.

He added that the policy will reward teachers who accept rural assignments by granting them an additional 20% of their gross salary as motivation.
