Sam George criticises AIDS Commission over lubricant distribution to MSM

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation and MP for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has taken issue with the Ghana AIDS Commission for providing lubricants to men who have sex with men.

Speaking during discussions on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, on Friday, April 23, he argued that such interventions should instead focus on strengthening maternal healthcare services.

As the lead sponsor of the bill, he questioned the Commission’s strategy, suggesting it does not align with its core responsibility of combating HIV.

He claimed there is evidence of officials from the Commission engaging with pro-LGBTQ groups and supplying them with lubricants, asking why an agency tasked with fighting HIV would support such measures.

He also dismissed the explanation that the distribution is intended to reduce HIV transmission among those already infected, stating that the approach, in his view, encourages the continuation of such practices.

Mr. George further maintained that public health resources should be redirected to more pressing needs, particularly maternal care, emphasizing the need for better facilities such as hospital beds for women during childbirth.
