NPP selects Baba Ali Yussif as parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East by-election

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially selected Baba Ali Yussif as its parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

The decision was announced in a press release issued on Monday, February 9, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong. It follows what the party described as extensive consultations and a consensus-building process aimed at presenting a united front ahead of the polls.

Baba Ali Yussif, who currently serves as the NPP’s Constituency Secretary in Ayawaso East, was formally acclaimed as the party’s candidate on Sunday, February 8, 2026, during an expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting and Delegates Conference.

According to the statement, the National Executive Committee (NEC) had earlier constituted a Candidate Search Committee, chaired by former General Secretary John Boadu, to identify a suitable candidate capable of mounting a strong challenge in the traditionally NDC-held constituency.

The NPP’s swift endorsement of a single candidate comes at a time when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is grappling with internal tensions and allegations of vote-buying arising from its parliamentary primaries in the constituency.

In the statement, Mr Kodua Frimpong called on party members and supporters to put aside internal differences and rally behind Baba Ali Yussif in the build-up to the by-election.

“The Party therefore calls on all members, supporters, and sympathisers of the NPP to rally solidly behind Baba Ali Yussif, who represents the Party’s best opportunity to secure victory and help restore hope, effective representation, and prosperity to the Ayawaso East Constituency,” the statement said.

With the Electoral Commission intensifying preparations for the March 3 by-election, attention now turns to whether the NPP can translate its internal unity into electoral success and break the NDC’s long-standing dominance in Ayawaso East.
