NIA urges workers to halt strike, requests two weeks to finalise migration process
Management of the National Identification Authority has appealed to staff to suspend their planned strike action and allow government an additional two weeks to complete processes related to the approval and implementation of migration reports concerning workers’ conditions of service.
The appeal follows the announcement by workers of the authority that they intend to begin an indefinite strike from May 13, 2026, over delays in implementing the migration exercise.
The planned industrial action was communicated by the Public Services Workers’ Union in a letter dated May 6, 2026, addressed to the National Labour Commission and the NIA.
According to the union, the decision was triggered by prolonged delays in implementing the migration process, despite the approval of the Scheme of Service in July 2024 and the start of the migration exercise in December 2024.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, May 8, the Head of Corporate Affairs at the NIA, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, said management is working closely with relevant institutions to complete the process.
He explained that the document had moved from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to the Finance Ministry, where it is currently undergoing the necessary approval stages before reaching the Minister for final endorsement.
According to him, the Finance Minister has assured management that the document will be signed within two weeks to allow the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to begin implementation.
Mr. Darlas also assured workers that management remains committed to addressing staff concerns and ensuring employees are properly motivated through the appropriate procedures.
