Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has indicated that President John Dramani Mahama is fully committed to assenting to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill as soon as it successfully completes the parliamentary process.

In an interview with Accra-based Joy FM, Mr. Dafeamekpor stated that the President has no doubts or second thoughts about the bill and is prepared to give it swift approval once it is laid before him.

According to the Majority Chief Whip, President Mahama’s resolve on the matter is firm and unquestionable.

“He has made it clear that he is ready. His pen is ready, the ink is flowing. Once the bill is presented, he will sign it without delay,” he said.

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has sparked widespread debate both locally and internationally. The proposed legislation aims to regulate matters related to sexual orientation, gender identity, family values, and advocacy activities connected to these issues in Ghana.

Advocates of the bill — including religious organisations, traditional authorities, and conservative civil society groups — argue that it is crucial for preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage, moral standards, and the traditional concept of family.

On the other hand, critics such as human rights groups, legal practitioners, and members of the international community have raised concerns that the bill could violate constitutional freedoms and breach international human rights obligations Ghana has committed to.

Despite the controversy, Mr. Dafeamekpor reaffirmed the Majority Caucus’ determination to see the bill passed, insisting that Parliament is acting in line with the wishes of the Ghanaian people.

He assured religious bodies and faith-based organisations that the bill will be passed, stressing that even before the legislative process resumes, the President has already expressed readiness to assent to it.
