“I couldn’t work in peace for a year” – Kpandai MP speaks after Supreme Court restores seat

Kpandai Member of Parliament, Matthew Nyindam, has described the past year as one of the toughest phases of his political career, saying the legal challenge to his mandate deprived him of peace and stability.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, he explained that the uncertainty surrounding his seat created constant fear and emotional pressure, making it difficult for him to effectively carry out his parliamentary duties.

“For the past year, I haven’t had peace to function as an MP,” he said, adding that the experience had been extremely stressful but something he endured as part of public service.

His comments come after the Supreme Court overturned a High Court ruling that had nullified his election. In a 4–1 majority decision, the apex court reinstated him as the duly elected MP for Kpandai, citing a jurisdictional mistake by the Tamale High Court.

Mr Nyindam said the earlier judgment came as a complete shock and drastically affected his life.

“That decision changed everything for me,” he noted, explaining that it introduced him to the realities of Ghana’s judicial system for the first time.

At 50 years old, he revealed he had never set foot in a courtroom before the case and described the experience as one he would not wish on any fellow lawmaker.

He insisted his electoral victory was clean and legitimate, stressing that he had never engaged in any form of wrongdoing.

“I won fairly. There was no fraud involved,” he said firmly.

Reflecting on his political rise, Nyindam recalled defeating an incumbent MP in 2013 who had held the seat for two decades under the NDC and even served as a minister.

Despite being a classroom teacher at the time, he said the people of Kpandai placed their trust in him against all expectations.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, the MP expressed gratitude, saying he believes divine justice has ultimately prevailed.

“I feel God has spoken,” he concluded.
