Government Clears Over GH¢10bn in Road Contractor Arrears in 2025 – Roads Minister

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, has disclosed that the government cleared more than GH¢10 billion owed to road contractors by the end of December 2025.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, Mr. Agbodza described the payment as a historic milestone, noting that such a large sum had never been settled within a single period in Ghana’s recent history.

“By December 31, 2025, the arrears paid to road contractors reached almost GH¢10 billion. This level of payment within just a few months is unprecedented. All these arrears were for projects awarded in the eight years prior to President Mahama assuming office,” he explained.

He questioned when, in Ghana’s history, any administration had settled such a huge amount—close to GH¢10 billion—within only two to three months.

Mr. Agbodza emphasised that prompt payment of arrears is essential for sustaining ongoing road projects and supporting contractors to work efficiently, as it enables them to mobilise equipment and resources without delays.

On the Eastern Corridor Road, the minister announced that the entire stretch is expected to be completed by December 2027, as the government accelerates efforts to finish the remaining sections of what he described as one of the country’s longest continuous road networks.
