Bernard Bediako Dismisses Quorum Concerns Over Passage of Anti-LGBTQ Bill

The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako, has rejected claims that Parliament lacked the required quorum during the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025.

Speaking on Channel One TV's Big Issue programme, the lawmaker maintained that parliamentary procedure presumes the existence of a quorum unless a member formally raises an objection. He argued that no such concern was brought before the House during proceedings.

According to Mr Bediako, several prominent Minority members, including Alexander Afenyo-Markin and John Ntim Fordjour, were present when the bill was debated and passed but did not challenge the numbers in the chamber.

He stressed that because no objection was raised at the time, Parliament proceeded with the legislative process in accordance with its established rules and practices.

The comments come in response to concerns from some Minority lawmakers who have questioned whether the required number of Members of Parliament were present when the controversial legislation was approved on May 30, 2026.

Despite the controversy, supporters of the bill insist that Parliament acted within its procedural framework and that the legislation was validly passed.
