Suhuyini warns Free Zones CEO’s remarks could weaken anti-galamsey efforts

A member of the NDC Communication Team, Hamza Suhuyini, has criticised comments made by the CEO of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr. Mavis Awusi, regarding concerns raised by the Church of Pentecost over illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

He argued that the CEO’s response does not align with the government’s broader stance on tackling illegal mining and could potentially weaken ongoing efforts to address the environmental crisis.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, April 25, Suhuyini emphasized that the Church of Pentecost has consistently played an active role in highlighting the dangers of galamsey. He noted that as far back as 2022, the Church had launched campaigns and its Chairman, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, personally engaged in field visits to affected mining sites.

According to him, the Church’s long-standing involvement means its concerns should not be dismissed or misrepresented. He expressed concern that Dr. Awusi’s reaction lacked the level of coordination and tone expected from officials involved in the anti-galamsey agenda.

Suhuyini added that the remarks could send conflicting signals about the government’s commitment to the fight against illegal mining, especially at a time when collaboration among stakeholders is crucial.

During the Church’s General Council Meeting, Apostle Nyamekye highlighted the severe impact of galamsey on water bodies, noting that pollution has forced some communities to rely on artificial pools for baptisms.

However, in an earlier interview, Dr. Awusi maintained that while she respects the Church leader, his comments ventured into political territory and advised him to focus on his religious responsibilities.
