Reliable power and water are essential for Ghana’s industrial growth - Nii Moi Thompson
The Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission, Nii Moi Thompson, has underscored the importance of infrastructure—particularly electricity and water—in driving Ghana’s economic transformation, warning that weaknesses in these sectors could derail industrialisation efforts.
Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV with Bernard Avle on April 29, 2026, he explained that electricity is a cornerstone of modern economic activity. He noted that in many economic models, power consumption is often used as an indicator of growth, emphasizing that industrial development is impossible without a stable electricity supply.
Dr. Thompson also drew attention to the water sector, which he believes is often overlooked despite its equally vital role in supporting economic production. He criticized the performance of Ghana Water Limited, accusing the company of inefficiency and straying from its primary responsibility of providing potable water to households, industries, and businesses.
Referring to the company’s performance targets, he pointed out that while it had pledged to reduce non-revenue water losses from 45% to 25% between 2022 and 2025, the situation has instead worsened, with losses reportedly rising to 52%, raising concerns about accountability.
He further faulted Ghana Water Limited for entering the sachet and bottled water market, arguing that such activities distract from its core mandate and create unnecessary competition with private sector operators.
According to Dr. Thompson, this shift in focus undermines the company’s ability to deliver reliable water for industrial use, which is critical for value addition. He stressed that without consistent access to both electricity and water, Ghana cannot effectively industrialize or sustain long-term economic growth.
He concluded by warning that persistent inefficiencies in these essential sectors could significantly slow the country’s broader development agenda.
