Injured Ghanaian Peacekeeper in Lebanon Attack Undergoes Successful Surgery — Deputy Defence Minister
Deputy Defence Minister, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has announced that one of the Ghanaian soldiers seriously injured during the recent attack on a peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon has successfully undergone surgery after being airlifted to Beirut for medical treatment.
Providing an update on the condition of Ghanaian troops deployed under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the Deputy Minister explained that the soldier sustained severe injuries to both legs and the hip during the attack. He noted that the surgery, carried out on the morning of Saturday, March 7, was successful and the soldier is now stable and recovering.
Genfi further disclosed that four other Ghanaian soldiers who suffered minor injuries during the incident are also in stable condition and responding positively to treatment.
Beyond the injuries, the attack caused considerable personal losses among some of the troops. According to the Deputy Minister, about 15 officers lost their personal belongings following a fire outbreak that destroyed parts of their accommodation.
He also expressed appreciation for international support in the aftermath of the attack. Genfi revealed that France showed solidarity with Ghana after Alice Rufo, France’s Minister Delegate for Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs, held a telephone conversation with him to convey support.
He added that France has also raised concerns about the situation at the United Nations, noting that French peacekeepers are equally deployed in Lebanon.
The Deputy Defence Minister stressed that Ghana values the support and assured that the government is taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of Ghanaian troops serving under the UN mission.
Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana has formally lodged a complaint at the United Nations headquarters, urging all parties involved in the conflict to respect the neutrality and safety of peacekeepers operating in the mission area.
