GPRTU Warns of Possible Transport Fare Increase as Fuel Prices Set to Rise

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has signalled that transport fares may soon go up as fuel prices are projected to increase in the next pricing window.

The adjustment is expected ahead of the second fuel pricing window, which takes effect on Monday, March 16, 2026.

Industry projections show that pump prices are likely to rise across the country a development that will add further financial pressure on commercial transport operators.

Fuel Prices See Significant Upward Shift

Current market indicators show sharp increases across key petroleum products:

  • Petrol: GH¢10.46 → GH¢11.57 per litre (+GH¢1.11)
  • Diesel: GH¢11.42 → GH¢14.35 per litre (+GH¢2.93)
  • LPG: GH¢9.38 → GH¢10.67 per kg (+GH¢1.29)

Transport operators warn that these upward shifts heavily impact operational costs, especially at a time when the cost of spare parts and servicing remains high.

Drivers Facing Rising Costs GPRTU

Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Abass Imoro, explained that the union has already intervened to stop some drivers from increasing fares independently due to growing financial pressure.

“We work for profit, and for some time now fares have remained unchanged. Some drivers tried to increase prices, but we intervened to stop them. That shows they are looking for adjustments,” he noted in an interview on Channel One TV on Sunday, March 15.

He added that prices of spare parts, lubricants and other essential maintenance items have been rising steadily.

Fare Review Likely if Fuel Prices Increase

Mr. Imoro said the union does not hastily adjust fares, but any major upward movement in fuel prices will force a review.

“If the price of fuel goes up, then naturally everyone should expect a change in lorry fares,” he emphasized.

Industry watchers say the next pricing window will determine whether commuters across the country will pay more for transportation in the coming days.
