Government ready to sponsor overseas treatment for GAF recruitment stampede victim if required – Health Minister
The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the government is willing to arrange medical treatment abroad for Sandra Baafi Boateng, a victim injured during a military recruitment stampede, if doctors recommend it.
Speaking in Parliament on Monday, March 9, the minister updated lawmakers on the condition of Ms. Baafi Boateng, who suffered serious injuries during a recruitment exercise conducted by the Ghana Armed Forces.
Mr. Akandoh explained that the Ministry of Health has been collaborating closely with Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to ensure she receives the necessary specialist medical attention.
He assured Parliament that the government remains fully committed to supporting her recovery and is taking all required steps to speed up her treatment process.
According to the minister, Ms. Baafi Boateng sustained severe injuries during the recruitment exercise held on November 12, 2025, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. She was initially admitted and treated under the supervision of medical specialists, with the government covering all the associated healthcare costs to relieve her family of the financial burden.
Mr. Akandoh also revealed that on February 26, 2026, she was transferred to 37 Military Hospital to continue receiving advanced medical care.
Currently, she is being treated by a multidisciplinary team of specialists, and her recovery programme includes rehabilitation and social support services.
The Health Minister noted that authorities are considering all available treatment options, both within Ghana and internationally, to ensure that she receives the best possible medical care.
Since the incident during the 2025/2026 enlistment exercise, Ms. Baafi Boateng has remained bedridden as she continues her treatment and recovery process.
