Armoured Buses Deployed on Major Highways to Fight Robbery – Muntaka
Government has deployed specially equipped armoured buses on major highways across the country as part of an intensified national strategy to curb highway robbery and improve passenger safety.
Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, disclosed the intervention during President John Dramani Mahama’s “Resetting Ghana” citizens engagement in the Savannah Region, noting that the deployment is already yielding positive results.
According to the Minister, the armoured buses operate covertly under various transport company identities, enabling security agencies to discreetly track criminal movements and respond more effectively to robbery activities along high-risk corridors.
“One of the major challenges we used to have was the long stretches where armed robbers blocked travellers and took their belongings,” he explained.
“Today, under the watch of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, we’ve acquired armoured buses, and these buses have been doing a wonderful job on most long-stretch routes because we keep branding them differently.”
Mr. Muntaka revealed that the buses are frequently rebranded as STC, VIP, OA, and other transport services to prevent criminals from identifying them.
“Today we’ll brand them as STC, the next day as VIP, another day as OA just to make sure we get the perpetrators,” he said.
The Interior Minister further commended the Inspector-General of Police and his team for their strong backing of the initiative, noting improved arrest rates and enhanced highway surveillance.
“I can assure you the IGP and his team are doing excellently. We’ve been getting a lot of the highway armed robbers,” he stated.
He added that government expects the deployment of armoured buses, alongside heightened police operations, to make Ghana’s highways significantly safer than in previous years.
