'Arrest another NPP member, and we will burn down your HQ' – NPP’s Benghazi warns NDC
A member of the National Communications Team of the New Patriotic Party, Benjamin Gyewu-Appiah, has issued a strong warning to the National Democratic Congress over what he describes as harassment and intimidation of opposition members by the ruling government.
Speaking during a political discussion on Onua FM, in comments later shared on X and sighted on GhanaWeb on May 20, 2026, Gyewu-Appiah—popularly known as “Benghazi”—warned that NPP supporters would not hesitate to burn down the NDC headquarters if any further arrests of NPP members occur.
According to him, the ruling government has been engaging in unlawful arrests of NPP supporters, an act he believes amounts to abuse of power and a violation of human rights.
He argued that under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, opposition members were not subjected to such treatment, adding that the era of political intimidation—referencing the period associated with Jerry John Rawlings—was long over.
“If they continue to arrest our members, the next time such a thing happens, we will burn down the NDC headquarters. The days when they could intimidate us are gone,” he said.
Gyewu-Appiah further accused the National Peace Council and other state bodies of remaining silent while NPP members are allegedly targeted.
“The Peace Council and other state elders are sitting quietly while these things happen. This is a warning because we are tired of staying silent for a long time,” he added.
Following the comments, the show’s host urged him to retract and apologise. Gyewu-Appiah refused, insisting he stood firmly by his words.
“No, I won’t apologise. Let them go and arrest another NPP member, and we shall see,” he said.
