Afenyo-Markin Criticises Government’s Social Policies, Describes Approach as Inconsistent

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has taken a swipe at the government’s management of social intervention programmes and taxation policies, labelling the overall approach as disjointed and lacking clear direction.

Addressing journalists during a parliamentary leadership briefing ahead of the House’s return, Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed concern that several government initiatives were already facing difficulties by the close of 2025, pointing to what he described as weak policy coordination.

He noted that although the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had strongly criticised governance under the previous administration while in opposition, there has been little visible improvement almost a year into their tenure.

“Beyond the introduction of GoldBod, which appears to have helped stabilise the cedi, progress in other areas such as agriculture has been minimal. Even major promises like the 24-Hour Economy are yet to deliver meaningful outcomes,” he stated.

The Minority Leader called on the government to adopt a more structured and results-driven approach, particularly in areas of taxation and economic development, to ensure broader national impact.

According to him, inconsistent policies could undermine growth and weaken public confidence in social programmes.
