“A Tax for Galamsey” Probe into alleged levies in Amansie Central nearing completion — Schandorf
The Media Relations Officer at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, has disclosed that investigations into alleged levies imposed on illegal miners in Amansie Central District are at an advanced stage, with findings expected before the end of the week.
Speaking on JoyNews’ News Desk programme, he indicated that substantial progress has been made in the probe, noting that authorities have carefully considered the response provided by the district assembly involved.
According to him, the assembly defended the charges, arguing that the levies were not newly introduced but had existed for years. However, Mr Schandorf questioned why officials engaged with individuals who had presented themselves as illegal miners during the undercover investigation.
He stressed that even if the levies were longstanding, the critical issue remains the decision to transact with persons who openly posed as operating outside the law.
The Ministry, he said, expects to finalise the investigation by week’s end, after which detailed information regarding any sanctions and corrective measures will be publicly announced. He added that the outcome could extend beyond the assembly under scrutiny, as similar charges may be in place in other districts.
Documentary uncovers structured levies on illegal mining
An investigative piece titled A Tax for Galamsey, produced by JoyNews, alleges that illegal mining activities in Amansie Central have evolved into a structured system where operators are formally charged and issued receipts.
The documentary claims that illegal miners are required to pay fixed “registration” fees — including GH¢3,000 per changfan machine and significantly higher amounts per excavator — in return for uninterrupted operations.
It further alleges that these payments are documented with official receipts, stickers, and bank deposits made into assembly accounts, effectively turning unlawful mining activities into an organised revenue stream.
